Why Did Jesus Get Baptized?

By

Throughout Israelite history there had always been a remnant that did not go the way of rebellion against God, but lived according to His Word and His will.

When John the Baptist came preaching and teaching about baptism, he was calling such a remnant to make a public declaration of their desire to follow God in righteousness and faithfulness. Those who came to be baptized by John publicly declared in front of the entire crowd that when they entered the water they were part of the corrupt Judaism, but when they came back up out of the water they no longer identified with the corrupt way of doing things, but were now part of the new order of God which would follow and obey Him in righteousness and justice.

The baptism of Jesus

Was John an Essene?

It is because of John’s message of baptism and separation from the corruption of Judaism that many scholars believe that John may have been part of a Jewish sect called the Essenes. The Essenes lived in the Judean desert wilderness, and they too believed that Judaism had become corrupt. To separate themselves from the corruption, they moved out into the wilderness to live, work, and worship in a holy community.

The writings of the Essenes sound similar to some of the things preached by John the Baptist, and their writings also contain instructions for the baptisms of people who join them. Archeologists have uncovered large baptismal pools where the Essenes would have undergone these ritual baptisms of separation.

Baptism in Judaism

But whether John was an Essene or not (I tend to think not), the point that in the days of John, Jesus, Peter, Paul, and the early church, people knew what baptism meant. Not only did every religion in the area practice some form of baptism for various reasons and purposes, but within Judaism, baptisms were a central practice. They indicated a death to the past and a rising to a new life. Following the definition of baptism, a water baptism indicated that a person would fully identify and immerse themselves in a new way of living for the future.

Why Did Jesus Get Baptized?

So when then did Jesus get baptized? When Jesus came to be baptized by John in the Jordan, He was making a public declaration about which type of Judaism He thought was best. The baptism of Jesus was not so He could get forgiveness of sin, for Jesus had not sinned. Nor was the baptism of Jesus for conversion, or to be saved, or to receive eternal life, or any such thing.

Baptism of JesusNo, through baptism, Jesus was rejecting the corruption that had entered the religious and political spheres of Judaism, and was choosing to side with those who sought generosity, honesty, peace, and grace.

The baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan has nothing to do with repenting of sin or getting saved, but everything to do with making a public declaration about which side Jesus is on and what He will live His life for.

John was calling the people to turn away from the corruption, and be restored to a new life of faithful obedience to God, and Jesus responded to that call by getting baptized by John in the Jordan River. Jesus wanted to be fully immersed and identified in the values of the Kingdom of God that John was preaching.

I like this idea: “through baptism, Jesus was rejecting the corruption that had entered the religious and political spheres of Judaism, and was choosing to side with those who sought generosity, honesty, peace, and grace.”

This makes so much sense. In baptism I can totally identify with (immerse myself in) this Jesus. I’ve not heard this explanation until now. It pretty much says what I personally experienced.

Unfortunately, the “official” explanations I’ve heard from churchmen have been all over the map, but none have emphasized this total identification with Jesus and the life He lived. Instead, I’ve heard about being baptized to “convince your friends and relatives to get saved”(I’ve never seen that happen), to “prove you’re a Christian”(I don’t think it proves that), because “the church requires it for membership”(So I’ll just not be a member of your “church”), to “submit yourself to the authority of the elders” (authority that I doubt is theirs in in the first place), etc.

Since I’ve been “on the inside” of leadership, I know that the real reason most churches try to baptize (in many cases rebaptize) as many people as possible is what I think of a church “bean counting”, resulting in a statistic that proves the church is actually doing something. I learned the hard way how to make churchmen enraged – Ask them how many of those baptisms were actually new believers.

Church bean counting through baptism is so prevalent. You know that churches need to pad their annual report to the denominational headquarters and to make it look like the church is “growing.”

Not a bad theory. But picture Jesus wandering around in the desert, layered in dirt and sand. Might it just have been that Jesus saw what JBap was doing in the river Jordan and thought to himself: this is the perfect opportunity for a good wash?

    Just thinking outside the box.

Ha! Jesus was dirty. Maybe he just needed a good wash.

Thanks, Jeremy! Gave me some clarification.

What if the Spirit as like a dove upon Him meant to Israel that Jesus is the Christ of God, which means in the Greek, the Anointed One? It was an anointing of a human being, the Human (Son of Man) that would be the One New Adam (Man). After all, it was John the baptizer who said he baptized with water so that the Christ would be revealed. And what if the voice of Father saying, “This is My Son with whom I am well pleased,” meant that Jesus was accepted by Father? What if this pleasing expression of Father was because Jesus is in Him, and the Father in Jesus? What if relatedness takes no effort in the flesh, no work of the flesh, but DNA. Jesus had not taken up His High Priest, Prophet, Teacher, and suffering Servant ‘ministry’ as the Anointed One yet, until Father anointed Him with the Power of His Spirit. He acted in, through, and with the Fullness in Him, Father’s Life. Jesus laid down His Divine power and lived ONLY through the Life of Father within Him, and it is in this symbolic earthen baptism of death into Life which points Him directly to the cross and taking the sins of the world upon Him unto death, death as a Human being. He defeated the adversary as a human, not God. I would love to go on, but I should refrain. I leave you one more thought: the Fullness of God came into view here: Father, Spirit, and Son.

Great article, I have been asking the Lord “What is God’s Salvation Plan for our Gerneration” , the Lord showed me that BAPTISM is very important which every preacher leaves out not knowing it’s full meaning :

Genises 1, when the earth was formed it was related to a baptism

    NOAH’S GENERATION SAVED THROUGH BAPTISM

1 Peter 3:21 we see through Noah’s righteousness (God declared Noah righteous through his faith in him) his family was saved through BAPTISM, Noah’s and the flood referred as a baptism which now saves.

MOSE’S GENERATION ” ISREALITES SAVED THROUGH BAPTISM ”

1 Corinthians 10: 1-6 we see through Moses righteousness (God declared Moses righteous through his faith in him) the Isrealities were saved through BAPTISM as they were baptised into Moses through the red sea as a baptism.

ABRAHAM’S GENERATION ” ISREALITES SAVED THROUGH CIRCMCISSION RELATED TO BAPTISM ”

    Romans 4:9–1

“FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”2 we see through Abraham righteousness (God declared that he was righteous though his faith in him) the Jews though circumcission Abraham convenant with God.

O U R GENERATION ” JESUS BAPTISM AND THE CROSS”

Mathew 3:15 REASON FOR JESUS BAPTISM was ” to fulfill all righteousness”, we were all baptised into Jesus, everyone from Adam and Eve till the last person born before his return will be saved if we just have FAITH that Jesus has done everything for our salvation. By Jesus taking our sin had to die as wages of sin is death. JESUS HAD TO COMMIT THE OFFENCE BEFORE BEING PUNISHED BY DEATH (THE CROSS) DIED AND SHED HIS BLOOD. Do not forget John the Baptist called Jesus the lamb of God who takes the sins of the world a few times at his baptism.

JESUS HAD TO HAVE TAKEN ON OUR SIN BEFORE THE CROSS. HE HAD TO HAVE TAKEN ON SIN AT HIS BAPTISM (Baptism has continually been shown thoughout the Bible) here we must understand that John the Baptist, the high priest as Jesus said he was the greatest person that ever lived in the old testament. AS ALL NEW TESTIMENT ESPECIALLY HEBREWS 7-11 CLEARLY SHOW WHAT JESUS WAS TO FILFULL EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE TABANACLE.

1 John 5;6-12, —— who came by the water and the blood(and the Spirit testifies) when Jesus come out of the water and the Spirit descended upon Jesus).

O U R GENERATION ” JESUS BAPTISM AND THE CROSS”

    His BAPTISM AND THE CROSS.

Colossians 2:12 explicitly defined baptism as an act done through faith: “. . . having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God.” In baptism you were raised up with Christ through faith—your own faith,.

1 Peter 3:21 The apostle Peter, in his first letter, defined baptism this way, “. . . not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ”

Baptism is “an appeal to God for a good conscience.” It is an outward act and expression of inner confession and prayer to God for cleansing, that the one being baptized does, not his parents.

TO END GODS WORD IS SO WONDERFULL. There is so much more that relates to this topic for example:

If Jesus was total man then if he had taken our sins at his baptism just like the book of Leviticus, he could say to the cripple pick up your bed and walk your sins are forgiven, he knew he was carrying all our sins. Why would he be led to the wilderness after his baptism to be tested by Satan if he was GOD. The temptations would have meant nothing. Interesting, just like the lamb that was lead into the wilderness with Isreal’s sins. At his baptism he was called the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

    SALVATION FOR OUR GENERATION 2012

Once we believe by FAITH that are born again ACCCORDING TO SCRIPTURE from above according to the word of God (through his baptism and the cross) we receive the Holy Spirit and become his children. WE ARE SAVED THROUGH HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, NOTHING THAT WE COULD OR CAN DO, FOR HE DIED FOR US WHEN WE WERE STILL SINNERS.

WE ARE SAVED BY FAITH, PLEASE GET TO KNOW THE REAL MEANING OF TRUE FAITH, AS SOME FAITH OR WRONG FAITH WILL NOT GET YOU SAVED.

WE WERE IMPUTED SIN BY ADAM AND EVE, NOW JESUS CHRIST HAS IMPUTED HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS SO THAT WE ARE CLEARED ONCE AND FOR ALL FROM SIN, WE WERE SINNERS NOW WE ARE BORN AGAIN IN THE SPIRIT, AND THEREFORE WE ARE NOT SINNERS ANY MORE, JESUS TOOK OUR PASSED, PRESENT AND FUTURE SINS ONCE AND FOR ALL.

PS HE IS NOT COMING BACK FOR SIN AS HE HAS DEALT WITH IT ONCE , HE IS COMING BACK FOR HIS BRIDE

THERE IS SO MUCH THAT RELATES TO HIS BAPTISM, ONE WOULD HAVE TO WRITE A BOOK ON IT.

PLEASE ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN FAULT ME WILL BE WECOMED SO THAT I MY ASK THE GOD FOR THE CORRECT MEANING OF JESUS BAPTISM IN RELATION TO OUR SALVATION.

    GOD BLESS
