Pastor Throws a Hissy Fit

Have you ever been in a church where the pastor throws a hissy fit? It is not a pretty sight.

I threw one once in the first church I pastored… I call it my “Dead Plant” sermon. But that’s a story for another day. Also, I don’t think it was as bad as the tirade by Dr. Jim Standrish in the following video.

The saddest part of the video might be when pastor Jim Standrish, at the end of his tirade against the poor people in his church says, “I really feel good now.”

Yeah, and your whole congregation feels like crap.

I know that not all pastors are like this… most are not like this. At least, not in the pulpit…

But look, here’s the thing about pastoral ministry… it gives a man (or a small group of men) a whole bunch of power they should never be given. And sometimes this power goes to the head.

When people don’t pay attention, those in power get offended. When people don’t obey, those in power get angry. When people don’t support the leaders, those in power lash out.

Though I said the saddest part of the video is when the pastor said he feels good at the end, I think maybe the even sadder part is right at about 4:00 where he says, “If you loved me, and you submitted to me, you’d know what my heart is, and my message is, and you wouldn’t go about establishing your own kingdom…”

The implication is that the pastor has his own kingdom, and some of the people in the church are not helping him build it. But if they would just love the pastor and submit to him, then all would be well.

Jim Standridge

Last I checked, it is the Kingdom of God we are to be building, not the kingdom of a pastor or a church, and we build this Kingdom by submitting to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Head of the church.

Anyway, my heart aches for the people in this man’s church. I wish they could see the spiritual abuse that is being heaped upon them and leave this church to find real freedom and love in Jesus Christ.

Unbelievable. Just the kind of church that makes people atheists. If only they knew that the real Christ was not out to condemn them, but to rescue, heal, and forgive them.

        Ps
133:1 ¶ A Song of degrees of David.
        Behold, how
        good and
        how pleasant it
        is for
        brethren to dwell together in
        unity!

        Ps
133:2 It is like the precious ointment
        upon the
        head, that
        ran down
        upon the
        beard, even Aaron’s
        beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

        Ps
133:3 As the dew of Hermon, and
as the dew that descended upon
        the mountains of
        Zion: for
        there the
        LORD commanded the
        blessing, even life
        for evermore.

Definitely spiritual abuse because they all just sit there. Almost like scolded children. If they were knowledgeable of the situation they would one, stand up and leave or two, stand up and tell him to pack up his Enclave and GO!

    • says

Yep. This is a perfect example of spiritual abuse. I feel terrible for that little girl sitting in the front pew part way through the sermon. What sort of God does she picture when she sees this pastor behave this way in the name of God?

      • Rev. George Burkinshaw says

        We cannot and
will not justify that which is unjustifiable, however, what heinous iniquity from
        an untoward evil generation.

        Ac 2:40 And with many
other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

We are not to speak evil of any man much
less that which appears to be a faithful man having a bad day from persistent disrespect!

Tit 3:2 To speak evil of
no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all
        men.

Much less a man of God who is taking
the ministry in a personal way, most likely after many years of faithful dedicated
        service.

Jude 1:10 But these speak evil of
those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute
beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.

Had the pastor not spoken of the disrespect
        to himself, but of God; he would have been in the shoe’s of the prophet Malachi;
rather than a discouraged saint overcome with the ungodliness the comes from
rejection of that with which the lord Jesus Christ himself was rejected!

        Mal 1:6 ¶ A son
honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a
father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is
my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And
ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? 7 Ye offer polluted bread
upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The
table of the LORD is contemptible. 8 And if ye offer the blind
for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is
it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee,
or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts. 9 And now, I pray you,
beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means:
will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts.

10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for
nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have
no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering
at your hand.11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down
of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every
place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my
name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.12
But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is
polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.

13 Ye said also, Behold, what a
weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and
ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye
brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD. 14
But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth,
and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King,
saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.

However, the depraved monster and that
is being chartable that placed this video on the internet is very fortunate
that God has the grace he does not have, because he showed no grace to a man in
the anguish of his soul; for the rejection of Jesus Christ!

        2Pe 2:12 But these, as
natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of
the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own
        corruption;

True the pastors conduct was not proper,
but it took a brute beast to place it on the internet and bring an evil vengeance
and reproach on a pastor and the ministry!

        Jude 1:8 Likewise also
these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of
        dignities.

Two wrongs never made a right especially
when the first may have been no more than simple fatigue, however the latter
was an evil self righteous and vengeful act!

Ro 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves,
        but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine;
I will repay, saith the Lord.

The pastor was older in the lord and
should have been afforded the respect that he sought improperly!

Le 19:32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary
head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the
        LORD.

He should have been afforded the obedience
that he asked for in the lord!

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the
rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your
souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not
with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

I have always wondered what Alexander
the coppersmith did to Paul having greatly withstood his words!

        2Ti 4:14 Alexander the
coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:15
Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

The pastor may have stumbled at bearing
the reproach of Jesus Christ in a personal way which is truly very common and
is the major reason good men quit the ministry.

        1Sa 8:7 And the LORD
said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say
        unto thee: for they
        have
        not
        rejected
        thee, but they
        have
        rejected
        me, that I should not
        reign over them.

However, for the person that posted the
incident; words cannot describe the iniquity they will give account for!

        Ac 23:5 Then said Paul,
I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil
of the ruler of thy people.

It is good that they are under grace if
they are saved as under law they might have suffered what God sais they are
        worthy of!

        Ro 1:28 And even as
they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over
to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness,
maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil
things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding,
covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy
of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

No doubt they had pleasure in their transgressions,
may they have pleasure in their judgment!

        1Ti 5:24 Some men’s sins
are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow
        after.

        The pastor has received his
chastisement to an excess, there will be none necessary from God, however
another needs to greatly to repent!

1Sa 2:25 If one man sin against another,
the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who
shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of
their father, because the LORD would slay them.

I hope that they are saved that published
the video; if not they better get saved; hell is deep and the lowest hell is
reserved for the enemies of the cross of Christ!

        2Co 5:9 Wherefore we
labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath
done, whether it be good or bad.11 Knowing therefore the terror
of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust
also are made manifest in your consciences.

        Conclusion: 1Sa 15:23 For rebellion
        is
        as
        the
sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and
idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also
        rejected thee from being king.

I have no knowledge of who published the
video nor do I care to know, and I judge no man, but as a minister of the Gospel,
I judge righteous judgment and when I see great evil in the body of the Lord Jesus
        Christ I speak!

        Ps 133:1 ¶ A Song of
degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren
to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment
upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that
went down to the skirts of his garments; 3 As the dew of Hermon, and
as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD
commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

That is one long comment with a lot of Scripture quotations. Can you give a one or two sentence summary? I cannot tell if you are trying to defend the pastor in this video or not….

  3. says

So sad to hear preachers abuse their congregations and in the next breath say “I love you”. Such typical abuse actions and SO not our Jesus. I must say it is very difficult for me to walk into an established “church building” anymore. Keeping my eyes on Jesus and not preachers.

  4. Vaughn Bender says

This is a place never to darken its doorstep. When we stand at the foot
of the cross, ALL Christians stand on level ground! Listening to that
makes me feel lower than life! He is the opposite of Christ. that is
obvious. Time to get back to scripture. ha.. reminds me why I don’t
    attend institutional churches. .

    • says

Yep! Of course, not all Institutional churches are this way…. Or at least, not this bad….

Can you imagine if you were the guy who the pastor accused of being worth less than $0.15?

      • Vaughn Bender says

Well, I would feel lower than dirt. ….. I been an elder on a church board for about 2 days once, my eyes were opened shockingly and I stepped down after first board meeting. grrrr. Making decisions based on nothing, no facts, no background checks, not doctrinal checks of any sort. Just needed a guy to fill an office I guess. Not much into offices.. ha. I seen in other churches the preacher punch a wall next to the pulpit, he got so worked up, and people were saying AMEN, Praise the Lord. but I guess that is much more exciting than now.. Now in our small group worshiping from a living room in a home, we just share with one another about the challenges in life and pray for each other. Not have to fear what they think of you. Then we study a book of the bible. To some that is not too hip.. but with out my brothers and sisters in Christ.. would be a lot tougher .. I think.

  5. Keith E. says

“Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It
would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone
tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves. Luke 17:1-3

Would you consider this man a “stumbling block?” And not just for some in his congregation, but for the thousands who will view this video and have their preconceived notions about the church and it’s leaders validated, and subsequently, their hearts hardened further.

    • says

He might be. Someone told me this video went viral on YouTube… I read through some of the comments. Tough to say if people will leave their church over this, but it certainly reinforced in the minds of some the view they have of Christians as arrogant jerks. It is so sad.

Truly… we are not all like that!

  6. Ntjufen Rostand says

    Bonjour

That issue of pastors reigning while leading is a cold sore. It reveals a deeper problem: authority and leadership in the church of Yeshua Mashiah. This hissy fit reveals the true state of the heart of that “preacher”: “The good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good; and the wicked man out of the wicked, brings forth what is wicked: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Lukas 6:45)
They are really scarce, the assemblies within which the pastor is not reigning in “his” kingdom. Lord, have mercy on us!

  7. Sam says

This fellow is a shameless bully hiding behind the skirts of religion. Too bad he has so cowed his audience that none of them will stand up to him. This is religion run amuck.

I believe that the Spirit draws people to Himself. But people like this fellow (and so many others) sure do make the Spirit’s job difficult. Using your terminology, they seem to be trying to chase people away from the Kingdom of God and into their kingdom. I suppose that means they think they’re the king of their kingdom. In terms of the television series from the 50’s (“Queen For A Day”), that would make them “King For A Day”, at least in their minds. Avoid such people at all costs.

    • says

Great points, Sam. Yes, this is a perfect example of religion run amuck. I fear that such situations are all too often today. Nobody in a leadership position likes to be crossed, much less those who have “God” on their side.
