Job Update


I have a job update for you. No, this is not another post about the book of Job, but instead about a place of employment. I know a lot of you have been following my job pilgrimage, so I wanted to let you know…

I got a job working for Obama!

Not really…it’s actually a job with the Federal Government…so it’s kind of for Obama (or Bush until Jan 20). I’m pretty excited about the job in a lot of ways, and interestingly enough, all that I’ve gone through during the past 3 years (and especially the last year) has actually prepared me pretty well for the requirements of this job. In some ways, it is only because of what I’ve gone through that I was able to get this job.

I can’t tell you what the job is, because if I did, I’d have to kill you. Ha ha! No, it’s nothing so serious as that, but it is somewhat sensitive, and so I can’t post it on a public blog. I can tell you that the job is in New York state, and I start on Monday! If any of you live in the New York area, please let me know, because I have never been there, and I have no idea what to expect. Also, I need some tips on how to survive the New York economy. (From what I can tell, things are EXPENSIVE up there).

    The following are notes that I took off a tape by Zane Hodges regarding the subject of Repentance. In this portion he talks about Job. The following are my hand written notes from that tape….

    One of the classic examples in the O.T. is Job. He REPENTS in Job 42:1-6, but first lets go to Job 1:20— because of the calamities in his life. One of the most splendid and marvelous words said by anybody on the pages of Scripture. Notice verse 22— “Never sinned!” or charged God with wrong!

    Job 2:8,9— His wife is speaking the words of Satan. Verse 2:10— Job did ***not sin with his LIPS!*** This is a splendid, remarkable response by Job. If Job would have just kept his mouth shut, we would not have the rest of the book. Unfortunately he doesn’t keep his ***lips*** shut. His three friends come to him— Job 2:13.

    ***Job 3:1— After this Job OPENED HIS MOUTH. This starts an avalanche of words— A series of exchanges between Job and his three friends.

    This time Job is NOT blameless with his LIPS.

    Job 32— Thirty chapters of inner action between Job and his three friends and then a new figure appears. We didn’t even know that this guy was here. This is Elihu, and he’s been sitting there listening to this, and he is far from pleased.

    Job 32:2— Elihu’s wrath was aroused AGAINST JOB because he justified himself rather than God. And his wrath was aroused with Job’s three friends because they had found no answer for the reason Job was going through this. They couldn’t figure out what SIN he had committed.

    Job 33:6-7; 34:5-9, 34-37; 36:16-17

    Elihu says God would have already ended your troubles IF it had not been because of what you (Job) have been talking about.

    Job 38— Elihu has now finished his lecture of Job.

    *** It’s VERY SIGNIFICANT that Job does NOT attempt an answer, and God comes right up behind Elihu and speaks.

    Job 38:1-3— God is saying to Job— You have darkened counsel by WORDS that you don’t know what you are talking about.

    Job 40:1-6— ***Job REPENTS!***

    At the end of chapter 2 Job had NOT SINNED with his LIPS. But 40 chapters later he admits he sinned with his LIPS and he REPENTED.

    Job 42:7— Job did not say anything about God that was wrong. He just over reached. He said things that he really didn’t understand what he was talking about.

    BUT the three friends said things about God that were wrong.

    Job 42:8-10— In Job’s Unrepented state this is the last thing Job would have done— prayed for his three accusers.

    Isn’t this absolutely fascinating! Job passes a test of calamities victoriously, and if he had only shut his mouth at that point, as Elihu pointed out, he could soon have been restored to the prosperity that God had in mind for him in the first place. But he talked, and talked and talked and talked. Finally he has to say— “I’m way over my head. I REPENT in dust and ashes.” God says “OK. That’s the end of the trouble. Here’s the prosperity I have for you.”

    This is a case where Repentance brought an end to the TEMPORAL judgment of God. From Job 3-40 the extension of Job’s troubles is part of God’s discipline of him. And his repentance brings the discipline to an end.

    This is one of the most fascinating studies in human behavior and in the behavior of regenerate people anywhere in the Bible. This is one of the most striking cases of BORN AGAIN people REPENTING found anywhere in the bible.

    I also have a note written next to Job 42:13 in my Bible which says….
    “Besides the new children God gave him, he still had other children who were with God.”

    Don’t know if these notes will be significance towards your thinking on Job. I just remembered I did this, looked it up, and thought I’d post it.

    Not in NYC, but north of there a bit. I am flying to NY on Sunday, and then returning in two weeks to bring my family back up with me. So far, we don’t have a place to stay…I’m hoping I can find some temporary housing while I am up there by myself for two weeks.

    Congrats, Jeremy. It sounds like an adventure!

    I relocated from DFW to New Hampshire 2 years ago, and I gotta tell you to stock up on water-proof gloves for the kids. You won’t be able to find any after January and the kids always lose them. The cheap ones at W*lm*rt are as good as any. If you’ll have a driveway, break down and get a snowblower right away. Shovelling snow takes much longer than you think. Look at Craig’s list first – in Texas – some Yankees take theirs with them when they move down south thinking they’ll use it, and sell ‘em dirt cheap.

    New York is a beautiful state. I think you will all love the change. I’ll pray for your housing situation.
