What are Some Good Podcasts?

By

Anybody know of some good podcasts?

For the last four years, I have had a 30 minute commute, which comes to an hour every day, or five hours per week, or over 250 hours per year.

For most of that time, I listened to talk radio, and usually, I get pretty worked up about what the radio hosts discuss. I recently realized that for me, listening to these talk shows all the time was spiritually, mentally, and emotionally harmful. I need to let my mind dwell on better things.

So, I am going to start listening to some podcasts.

I want them to focus on these areas:

  • Bible teaching
  • Discipleship
  • Church Issues
  • Missional Living

Here are some I am already listening to:

  • Truth for Life with Alistair Begg. I don’t always agree with his theology, but due to his Scottish accent, I could listen to him forever… Heck, he he could read the dictionary and I would listen! But he is also a good Bible teacher.
  • Wisdom for a Change with Alan Brisco. Alan interviews some of the leading church thinkers and writers of today, and posts these interviews in his podcast. I find the interviews insightful and instructive.
  • Beyond Evangelical with Frank Viola. I like the perspective and ideas of Frank Viola, and listen to his podcast.

But other than these three, what else should I fill my mind with? Any recommendations? Who do you listen to? What other good podcasts are out there?

Let me know in the comments below.

And please, whatever you do, do not recommend Mark Driscoll. I have tried and tried to listen to his sermons, but he gets me more worked up than those Talk Radio shows. Why? Well, in my opinion, he masterfully combines the two traits I loathe most in Bible teachers — ignorance and arrogance. He doesn’t know what he is talking about, and he doesn’t know that he doesn’t know.

So anyway, what podcasts do you listen to, and which ones do you recommend?

Can I recommend my own? It’s called “Discovering Grace” and can be found at http://jeremysarber.com/category/listen/discovering-grace/

I also listen to Theology Refresh, Reformed Forum, Renewing Your Mind, and ton of sermon podcasts/feeds.

You can definitely recommend your own. I will come check it out. Thanks!

Wayne Jacobsen’s the God Journey http://thegodjourney.com/

        • Lorrie

The God Journey is my all time fave – more of a discussion than a preach, but oh, so refreshing! Not too many new ones, but totally worth going back through some of the older ones!

          • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

I used to get Wayne’s newsletter, and loved it, so I am sure I will like his podcast. Thanks!

The only two I listen to regularly: Steve Brown (The Old White Guy, with the mellifluous voice, is very conservative, but often interviews some interesting authors) and Drew Marshall (out of Canada). Pick and choose from both. You can find them with your search engine of choice and download to your iPod or similar device.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

I love Steve Brown! How did I not know he had a podcast? I will definitely subscribe to his. I have not heard of Drew Marshall, but will check his out as well.

A favorite of mine is Greg Boyd at Woodland Hills…

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Ha! I just listened to a Greg Boyd sermon today (the first one on my commute!) when he spoke at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids back in 2008. It was called “Skubalon” and was pretty good. I will definitely subscribe to his as well.

How about ‘Into The Wild’ with Darin Hufford? http://www.freebelievers.com/Podcast/Into-the-wild

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Hmm. I haven’t heard of this one. Thanks!

  • Genoise

I’ve enjoyed Jon Zens’ messages: http://searchingtogether.org/audio-resources.html
In the past I have also been a big fan of Voddie Baucham.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

I like Jon, and will check out his podcast also. I have heard Voddie speak as well, and liked the one message I have heard by him. Thanks!

John Stott rocks. Excellent bible teaching with solid application. Even the sermons that are 20, 30, or 40 years old. Solid. Solid. Solid.

I didn’t know he had a podcast. I have read many of his books. Thanks for the recommendation!

    Have you tried Chuck Missler?

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Yes, I like Chuck Missler. Good Bible teaching, with some very provocative ideas.

Hi Jeremy. You might enjoy Raborn Johnson & Steve Sensenig’s Beyond The Box podcast. They talk about deep theological concepts.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

      Steve,
Never heard of them, but I will check it out! Thanks!

Two of my favorites are John Ortberg at Menlo Park Presbyterian and Mars Hill in Grand Rapids (still pretty good post-Rob Bell). I’ve also recently discovered a podcast called “Unbelievable.” It’s a radio show out of the UK in which the host moderates a discussion/debate between a Christian and a non-Christian on some topic of interest (e.g., the new atheism, creationism, gay marriage, etc.). Pretty fascinating and eye-opening.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Thanks for the rec’s. I used to subscribe to the Mars Hill one, but stopped when Rob left. For no real reason though… I usually liked their guest speakers more than Rob! Ha.

  • Keegan

Have you ever checked out Mike Bickle’s teaching library, or the International House of Prayer podcast? Some really good stuff on those.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

I have never heard of him. I will check it out! Thanks.

Life Study of the Bible at lsmradio.org. I have been listening for over a year and I enjoy Christ very much through their broadcasts.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Thanks. I am headed to their website now to see what they offer.

  • Adam

Hi Jeremy, another source for Bible teaching are archives from Dick Saunders. His audio messages are kind of tough to find but a good collection turns up here: http://www.voicesforchrist.org/speakers/335?page=1 I never could listen to his broadcasts in the U.S. apart from hearing his Rendezvous and Way To Life programs over Trans World Radio on shortwave radio during the late ’80s. A good part of my early Bible studies in my early Christian walk & I always loved his charming accent too.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

Charming accents always drag me in too. This is one reason I love Alistair Begg so much, though he is a good Bible teacher as well.

Brian Zahnd is a brilliant communicator of the Word (www.wolc.com). Greg Boyd (mentioned previously) is absolutely great as is Bruxy Cavey, from Canada (www.themeetinghouse.com). Jonathan Martin of Renovatus Church in SC is good, too. I just started listening to him.

    • http://www.tillhecomes.org/ Jeremy Myers

I am really enjoying Greg Boyd, and will check out these others. Thanks!
