It's posts like this that make jews believe that jesus was NOT the messiah. The old testament is perfectly clear that laws and commandments in them are forever. The ancient hebrew people were a circular thinking people, not linear. Jesus's parables must been seen from that view. A jewish one. Note that he did not condemn the teachings of the pharisees, (Matt. 23.3) but their behavior. Saying that Jesus wouldn't contradict what the torah taught is misleading. If christians don't feel like keeping the commandments, then fine, don't keep them. But don't teach something Jesus obviously didn't teach.

The Church is not perfect because we are not perfect but being perfected. Jesus is not interested in our money but our hearts. He knew what the young man needed to do to follow Him. Jesus does not want our money but our hearts.

Our life here on earth is a test and an opportunity to search and find the truth, and will inevitably lead to many mistakes as we draw closer to the truth. Jesus did not condemn the young man but was sad. Jesus does not condemn his Bride, the Church, either, will you.

Nice blog post. I think the rich young ruler actually breaks the law twice in Jesus' presence. First, he has pride in his wealth, which Jesus sees and addresses by telling him to get rid of his source of pride. Your blog post really does a great job of addressing the underlying nature of society of the time which helped to generate his pride. Second, he said he kept the law since his youth, which is in itself a prideful statement, which is self-refuting (a lie) since pride (in the way he displays it) is a sin.

Jeremy,

Just stumbled across this post after many weeks and saw the responses since I visited last. I did not take your written words as offensive in any way. I hope my lack of response did not discourage you, as it was more of a lack of time than a hurt feeling that caused me not to return. I really saw nothing wrong with the way you responded. I am not sure if we are in 100% agreement, but believe that we approach things in slightly different ways. I rarely see disagreement as heresy, but do believe there is a line in Scripture where heresy begins.

Blessings,
Dave

Isn't this just a version of the "prosperity gospel"? One problem with the idea is that if I've got the money or possessions, that means someone who needs it more than I do does not have these things.

What I consider a really strange permutation of this idea that I frequently observe among some Christians is underpaying the lowest paid people to "serve" them (the Christians). For example, ask the waiter at the restaurant for excellent service, but leave a lousy tip. Or, hire illegals for gardening or housecleaning work and pay them even less than minimum wage. After all, God has blessed us, not them, right?
