Throughout this book, I have argued that to truly become the church God desires in this world, we must get rid of nearly everything that gives the church power, authority, prestige, wealth, and glory. Though there are thousands of small things that can be done, I have tried to focus on some of the biggest areas of concern, such as our church buildings, professional paid clergy, doctrinal statements, and religious rites.

The reason is not because these things are inherently bad. They are not.

All of these things, in and of themselves, are morally neutral. The problem is that the way the church functions today, most of these items are used to gain control over people’s lives, generate greater and greater wealth for individual churches, and build upon our desires for power, fame, glory, and recognition in this world.

Where Jesus declined to meet His own needs, we have become a self-centered, needs-oriented church, asking people what they want, and then doing our best to give it to them. As we do this, more and more people come to our churches, which feeds our desire for recognition and fame—things that Jesus also rejected.

Where Jesus declined to become the ruler of the world, we have sought to gain power, dominance, riches, and control over other people and in some cases, over entire nations and countries.

For far too long we have accepted the goals and values of Satan in our attempts to establish the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. But it is not working. If we wish to rob a strongman’s house, we must first tie him up. But we have entered his house and let him tie us up. We have become his slaves.

So it is time to give it all up and return to the true mission and goal of the church. It is time to throw off our chains. It is time to rise up and fight. It is time to break the bonds that are twisted around us, pick up our holy weapons, and struggle on with the mission Jesus gave us, which we abandoned so many years ago.

It is time to break our deal with the devil.

If storming the gates of hell sounds shocking, it is because we never hear about it. The church never preaches it. The pastors ignore it. The seminaries hide it.

Why?

Because we have made a pact with the devil. Soon after the church laid siege to the gates of hell, Satan offered a truce, and we accepted. How did this happen?

Satan’s Offer to Jesus

Satan had previously made the same offer to Jesus, but He rebuffed Satan, and went on to lead the charge against the kingdom of darkness (Luke 4:1-13). After Jesus rejected the offers of Satan, Jesus announced that His mission was to find the people in chains and set them free, to seek out those who were living in darkness and bring them to light, to discover the prisons where captives were held and break their bonds, and to come to those who were broken and enslaved by the enemy and give them healing, hope, and freedom (Luke 4:18-19). Most of these people Jesus sought to rescue were held imprisoned behind the gates of hell, and so Jesus laid siege against them.

However, three years into the battle, our leader, our general, our commander was struck down. We thought we had lost. We were disheartened. We were defeated. But three days later, our defeat turned into victory when Jesus came striding out of the gates of hell, leading many captives with Him (Eph 4:8)!

Jesus gathered us together to explain what had happened and reveal the plans for the final stage in this siege. Though the war had been won, though death and the devil had been defeated, there were still battles to be fought, and captives to be freed. And though Jesus had cancelled the power of sin and escaped the clutches of hell, the gates still stood and many people were held captive behind them. So Jesus gave us His power and sent us on the mission of continuing the task He started (Matt 28:19-20; Acts 1:4-8).

Chapter 15 in my book, Close Your Church for Good, is called “To Hell with the Church.”

No, I am not cursing the church.

Instead, I am calling the church to fulfill the mission and purpose given to it by Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 16, Jesus said that He would build His church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. This does not mean that the church is to huddle safely behind marble walls and stained glass cathedrals, as Satan tries to beat down our doors. Rather, it is the church which is to lay siege to the gates of hell.

Wherever Satan has his strongholds, we are to attack. But our enemy is not flesh and blood — we do not attack other people. No, people are the captives and the victims. People are the ones we are fighting for, as we try to rescue and deliver them from the clutches of evil.

So let us stop inviting people to church, and instead invite the church to hell. Let us go with Jesus, and batter down hell’s gates.

The church should just go to hell.

Please do not get angry and offended at such a statement. After all, going to hell is what Jesus said we should do.

If the church is going to hell, then we are headed in the right direction.

To hell is where Jesus himself went. To hell is where Jesus led His disciples. To hell is where Jesus sent the church.

In Matthew 16 Jesus spoke for the first time about the church He was forming. He said, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Far too often the church imagines that Jesus is building the church as an impenetrable fortress, with huge walls and gleaming gates, and all the people of God huddle together inside in safety as the forces of darkness and evil attack from outside the gates. But inside the fortress of God, we are safe and secure.

But that is exactly the opposite of what Jesus is saying in Matthew 16. He says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church.

This post is the conclusion to the series on Giving up our Rights in which we have looked at some of the rights we think we deserve, and have seen that as followers of Jesus, we may be called upon to give up these rights for the sake of the gospel.

The greatest example of how to give up our rights is Jesus Christ. Though as God incarnate, He had every right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of His own personal happiness, though He had the ultimate freedom to make His own religion, to say whatever He wanted to whomever, to call crowds of disciples to follow after Him, and to take up all the power and force of the universe in His defense, Jesus instead chose to give it all away.

Rather than fight for His right to life, He went freely to His death, even to death on a cross (Php 2:8). Though He had the freedom and liberty to do whatever He wanted, He came instead to proclaim liberty to the captives (Luke 4:18), and give freedom to a world enslaved in sin (John 8:36).
