Becoming a Published Fisherman

Below is an excerpt from a book I’m writing called Adventures in Fishing (for Men). The book is a satirical allegory about Christian attempts at evangelism. He who has ears to hear…

Some of my detractors have begun saying that even though I founded the  World Fishing Training Center, I was not a successful fisherman because I had never actually caught any fish.

To show them how wrong they were, I decided to write a book. There is nothing better than writing a book for establishing credibility and proving that you are an authority in your area of expertise. After all, the word “author” is in “authority.” I had spent so much money buying books about fishing, attending fishing conferences, going to Africa to fish, and founding the World Fishing Training Center that although it was true that I had never caught any fish, this did not make me any less of an expert in fishing. And a book would prove it.

I initially wanted to write a book called Red Fish, Blue Fish as a way of talking about different types of fishing by Democrats and Republicans, but my agent told me that someone had already written a book with that title. I went down to the library and read this book. It was mostly pictures, and I bet the author has never even caught a fish. Besides, I don’t know a whole lot about politics, and my agent told me to focus on my area of expertise—fishing.

So I wrote this book instead. The book that proves I am a great fisherman is the book you are now reading.

And since you have read it, does it not prove that I am a great fisherman? Of course it does! If I wasn’t a good fisherman, why would I write a book about it? Why would anyone read it? The fact that you are reading this book about fishing proves that I am a great fisherman.

get-publishedOne other nice thing about being a published author, is that it proves that you are an expert in your field, which gets you invited to speak at conferences, which increases your visibility and platform in the fishing world, which then allows you to get more books published.

This becomes a never-ending cycle of publishing and speaking which can become a great career! Who knows? If I am successful enough, maybe I can even start my own line of t-shirts and bumper stickers to sell at these training conferences. Then I will really prove that I am a world-class fisherman.

As a closing piece of advice to all aspiring fisherman, I just want to encourage you to follow the same course as I have in becoming a famous fisherman. You must follow many of the same steps I did, one of which includes buying and reading books about fishing. This book is a step in the right direction, and I hope that when my next book comes out, you will buy and read it as well.

Until then, remember that fishing is not about how many fish you catch, or even if you catch any at all. Being a fisherman is about learning how to fish. As long as you do that, you are headed in the right direction. So keep your hooks in the water and out of your skin!
